Yes we can

6 November 2008 · Leave a Comment

Just for one day, we can get lost in the soaring rhetoric, a future of hope and peace, in someone who talks directly to each of us. Yes we can.

Then it’s back to reality.

The reason I’ve been supporting Barack Obama since before he nominated for President is not the wonderful words, or the motherhood (and fatherhood and grandparenthood) statements. It’s that I believe he can actually do what he says. He inspires hope, and from that can draw together a coalition of the brightest and most compassionate, who will steer America, and the rest of us, through these difficult times.

The US’s reputation has never been as sullied as it is at the moment. It’s not that we hate the people; it’s that we hate the idea of what America has become. A nation of ignorance and arrogance. And I believe Obama can change that perception. He can appeal to the people of the world for the creation of a kinder, gentler place.

Yesterday it was Obama’s sense of reality that really appealed to me:

“There will be setbacks and false starts. There are many who won’t agree with every decision or policy I make as President, and we know that government can’t solve every problem. But I will always be honest with you about the challenges we face. I will listen to you, especially when we disagree.”

It’s that promise of listening and honesty that appeals so much. Bring it on.
